Limerick Masters Irish Open

Over 300 swimmers - Over 1200 swims - Many PB's - Irish and Provincial records.

 

The gala was the largest Masters swim meet ever held in Ireland, over 330 competitors from 47 Clubs. Representatives from the UK, Italy and USA attended, and all were extended a truly Limerick sporting welcome.The Masters swimming community is growing with new clubs such as Shannon Masters  and Grand Masters from Edenderry participating in the gala programme for the first time.

Dymphna Morris from Aer Lingus Masters won the "Limerick 1500" trophy for the fastest time in the 1500m which was closest to a world record in the 50+ age group. Dymphna, anong with many others is currently training hard for the World Masters Chempionships 2012 in Reccioni later in the year. We wish all of you the best for this gala and hope that you have to pay excess baggage on the return journey due to the extra wieight of the medals.

The final heat of the 50m freestyle sprint was dominated by John Cunningham, Paul Kearney, Mark Battelle and John Reilly all who were well below the30  second mark. John Cunningham swam fly !!!!!!!!!!!!! To the delight of the home crowd, Mark Batelle won the "Limerick 50" trophy for the swimmer who achieved the closest time to a world record time in his age group with a time of 25:30.

 Mr Patrick Quinn, 81 years of age, from Adirondack Masters in upstate New York won the best visiting mens overseas swimmer and he was delighted to set a USA Masters Top 10 time in the 1500m event for his age group.

Congratulations to NAC Masters who for the first time won the best overall visiting team. Declan Harte their Team Manager was delighted at the team result.

As for the night in the penthouse of the Strand Hotel, well..............don't ask...............what a good nght.

We look forward to the next gathering in the first weekend in March next year, 2nd and 3rd, when we hope to see you all again.
