In the last event of these European cahampionships we had 5 swimmers, and maybe 6, more of that later. Claire O'Dwyer and Dymphna Morris both won gold in their event in times of 55:54.75 and 40:33.60 respectively. It is rhoumoured that Dymphna returned to work during the week and came back to support the Aer LIngus relay last evening.......something else.
Rob Genest had another great swim finishing 5th. For a period my heart was pounding as it appeared, in the preliminary results, that Rob was in a medal position. However it was not to be. Rob has had a fantastic championship with five finishes in 4th or 5th. He epitomises all that is good in Masters swimming and even though there were some fantastic medal swims he gets my vote for Irish swimmer of the championships. This takes nothing from Claire, LIz and Dymphna who between them have won our 5 gold medals.
The "Green Army" stood out both visually and audibly. The t-shirts supplied to all competitors by the Masters sub-committee were a real hit generating many positive comments. From all accounts the sense of team was very tangible and added hugely to the enjoyment of all at the championships.
The final medal count is 5 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze.

Well done to all who kept the flag flying high, even if it was at the afters !!! We look forward to hearing the stories, as long as the saying "what goes on tour...." does not apply. Ratty presence has been missed !!!!
