On the 14th January, a group of very talented and highly motivated Masters from all over the country, and one based in the UK, met for the first time in the NAC and the Masters Development Squad was formed. This is no ordinary group. All of the swimmers are in the Top Ten LEN (European) ranking for their events in their age group.
The clinic had presentations on competing at the highest level in our sport and pool sessions. Videos were taken of each swimmer for stroke analysis. All of this was done under the watchful eye of Paul Donovan one of the SI high performance coaches and Noel Murphy who gave great direction on dry land training.
The members of the first squad are:
Carol Cashel Dolphin SC ( 1500 Free )
John Cunningham Limerick Masters SC ( 100 Fly)
Lynne Donnelly Dolphin SC ( 100 Back )
Rob Genest Glenalbyn Masters SC ( 400 Free )
John McCarthy Glenalbyn Masters SC ( 200 Back )
Niamh McDonnell Aer Lingus SC ( 50 Fly )
Helena McGrath NAC Masters SC ( 400/200 IM )

Membership for the squad will be reviewed on an ongoing basis and after major competitions. The qualification criteria for the squad are set out in the attached document. The squad members appreciated the day and the quality of the coaching and presentations received. The clinic also provided a forum for like-minded athletes to meet, in a lot of cases for the first time, and compare notes. In short it was a hugely successful day and the parting comments were – great, but lets have another one soon. As with all top class athletes the inherent demand for improvement was tangible. The quality of the participants, coaches and presentations will be kept at the highest level possible in future clinics.
The formation of the squad is one of the key elements in the Masters Development Plan, Goal 5. The complete Development Plan can be seen elsewhere on this site. The tab to bring up the Development Plan is located at the top of this page.
